On-board IPMI BMC Specification
The Supermicro platform's Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) are built on the next components:
- ASPEED AST 2500 controller for Supermicro X11
- ASPEED AST 2400 controller for Supermicro X10
- Nuvoton WPCM450 Controller for Supermicro X9
- Renesas SH7757 Controller for Supermicro X9
The AST2500 and AST2400 are designed to dedicatedly support the PCI-E x1 bus interface and communicate by I2C/SMBus.The WPCM450 communicates with onboard components via six SMBus interfaces, Platform Environment Control Interface (PECI) buses, and General Purpose I/O ports.
Supermicro IPMI Utilities
The IPMI console can be accessed using Supermicro IPMI Utilities via a web browser. KVM-over-IP requires Java to run. Some motherboards additionally support access via HTML5, but without Virtual Media. Unlike other manufacturers, Supermicro provides full IPMI functionality, including a graphical console, without additional licenses. Additional licensing requires only centralized management through Supermicro Update Manager or Supermicro Server Manager.
IPMIView
Supermicro IPMIView is a proprietary GUI application witg built-in browser for companies who want to manage servers. You can easily manage Supermicro's server products with few steps. It supports standard IPMI command, KVM and Virtual Media.
IPMICFG
Supermicro IPMICFG is an in-band utility for configuring IPMI devices with command line interface providing standard IPMI and Supermicro proprietary OEM commands for BMC/FRU configuration. This CLI-based utility can be executed on UEFI, DOS, Windows, and Linux OS and does not require any additional software installation.
SMCIPMITool
Supermicro SMCIPMITool is an Out-of-Band Supermicro utility that allowing users to interface with IPMI devices via Command Line Interface. This utility provides both OS Command Line Mode and Shell Mode and can be easily integrated with existing infrastructure to connect with Supermicro BMC-controllers.
